Dedicated to the memory of Maurice Irvine

Irvine, Maurice. With great sadness the family of Edward Maurice Irvine announce his passing at 95 years of age on November 3rd 2021. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He and his wife Mary Keen were married for almost 67 years. Loving Father to Julie (Ty), Jim (Jill) and David (Mary). Grandfather to Ruth (Jeff), Rebecca (Ian), Danika (Glenn), Matthew (Vic) and Andrew (Breanna). Great Grandfather to Olivia, Callum, Lily and Alex.  Brother to Cecil in Australia, his late sisters Eileen and Colleen. Maurice was born on February 26th 1926 (26.2.26) at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, Northern Ireland. First home in Bessbrook, Co.Armagh, Northern Ireland and then the family moved to Toronto, Canada late 1926. They returned to Lambeg, Northern Ireland in 1932 and made yet another move to Hornsey, England six years later. In 1939 at the start of the War he and his brother were evacuated to St.Ives, Huntingdonshire, then on to London, England in 1940. In 1941 the family took the train to Edinburgh to to end up in Kilmarnock, Scotland to stay with a family friend and await a travel permit to move back to Belfast, Northern Ireland. 1942 to 1946 he apprenticed as an Electrical Engineer at Hugh Scotts in Belfast. 1946 to 1948 he was in the British Palestine Police in what is now Israel. 1949 to 1950 he was an RAF pilot in Northampton and Shropshire and then he began a 29 year career with the BBC becoming one of BBC Northern Ireland's Engineering Managers. In those early years he still flew part time as an RAF Volunteer Reservist in Surrey until 1954, flying Tiger Moths, Chipmunks and Harvards. He retired from BBC Northern Ireland leaving many admiring co workers.  His enthusiasm as an 'EM' was quite infectious. In his own quiet and gentlemanly way, he encouraged those around him, imparting confidence and empowering crew members to be as good as they could be. People pulled all the stops out for Maurice out of genuine respect, not because he demanded extra of them; he never needed to. Upon his retirement in 1980, the family emigrated to Canada. Maurice led an amazing life - he accomplished a lot in many different places while always creating a warm and loving home for his family. He died peacefully in his hometown of 32 years, London, Ontario, Canada with family by his side. As per his wish, there is no funeral, just a simple cremation. That's the way he was, never in need of attention.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and The R.A.F. Benevolent Fund.
